RIDING RWANDA > TOUR DETAILS

What is the Experience

A wonderful opportunity to experience a new country, relish genuine adventure and witness the daily lives of the Rwandan people living and working in the remote villages that are situated along the route.
Our in-country guide enables us to share the language and involve us in the culture to much more depth than just being tourists.

Embrace a magical ride through the Nyungwe rainforest where the views around every corner, and there are a lot of corners, are incredible. This is a road where you really need to ride taking in the majesty of the landscape, turn around go back savour the views in the other direction and then ride the road!

Our excursion isn’t for people who want to race along on a motorbike, as this would truly miss the point of the trip. The riding is well within the ability of a competent road rider.

Our trip starts and finishes in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali.

The traffic, like similar cities, is chaotic. The primary transport for local is the moto-taxi, these are 150cc motorcycles and there are apparently thousands of them. Traffic seems to come from all directions and whilst it is challenging, it is also great fun. A helpful factor being the low (and enforced) speed limits.
Generally, the maximum speed limit in built up areas is 60kph (37mph) and 80kph (50mph) elsewhere.
We run three expeditions in Rwanda :-
1. The Urwagasabo Expedition.
2. The Congo Nile Trail .
3. The South Heritage Corridor Trail.
1.  The Urwagasabo Expedition

This is an entirely road-based trip starting and finishing in Kigali it traverses the whole of Rwanda a takes 10 days

The name URWAGASABO holds deep historical and cultural meaning in Rwanda. Historically, “Urwagasabo” refers to a legendary place that symbolizes unity, valour, pride, and Rwandan identity. By adopting this name, the adventure captures the spirit of Rwanda’s heritage, honouring the courage, resilience, and togetherness of its people. It connects modern tourism with the nation’s rich cultural roots.

The addition of the word “Pride” highlights not only the joy and dignity of being Rwandan but also the unity in diversity represented by traveling across all regions of the country. As the riders journey from the south to the north and east to west, the name “URWAGASABO Pride” becomes a metaphor for national cohesion, showcasing Rwanda as one beautiful, interconnected nation.

The route itself covering the Southern Heritage Corridor Trail, Nyungwe Rainforest, Congo Nile Trail, Volcanoes region and twin lakes, and finally Akagera National Park before returning to Kigali, this represents a complete tour of Rwanda.

Using the name “URWAGASABO” encapsulates panoramic experiences, symbolizing that riders are journeying through the heart and soul of the entire nation, not just specific destinations.
“URWAGASABO Pride” is more than a name, it’s a story.
2.  The Congo Nile Trail

This is a mixture of off road and on road, but biased towards off-road. It is relatively easy off road and is within the ability of a competent road rider. It includes 2 days in Kigali at the start of the trip.

This trip endeavours to ensure that travellers experience the culture and lifestyle of Rwanda. It begins with a journey to a local market in Kigali, the genocide Memorial and visits a local school charity. The motorcycle journey begins with a road ride to the north of the country, to Musanze. There we ride around the volcanoes before our overnight stay.

The Congo Nile trail commences and basically follows the shores of Lake Kivu for 4 days, staying in, what can only be described as, idyllic locations. On the way we have the opportunity to visit the source of the Nile (confirmed as the furthest and therefore, arguably the original source) and visit remote villages. Once we complete the trail we venture on road to the Nyungwe rain forest and then off road to our final overnight stop before returning to Kigali.
3.  The South Heritage Corridor Trail

South Heritage Corridor Trail: Riding through Rwanda’s Living History

The South Heritage Corridor Trail offers a premier motorbike adventure that reveals Rwanda’s history, culture, and natural beauty in a single unforgettable journey. This route begins at the iconic Nyabarongo Bridge in Kamonyi and stretches all the way to the mystic Nyungwe National Park, immersing riders in a rich blend of heritage and breathtaking landscapes.

The journey starts from Kigali the capital city of Rwanda and connects the riders with panoramic views of the Nyabarongo River, a significant Nile tributary. The ride continues through rolling terrain toward Nyanza, the historical heart of the Rwandan kingdom. Here, travellers explore the King’s Palaces and learn about royal traditions that shaped the country’s identity.

The route continues to Huye, home to the National Museum of Rwanda, where riders absorb deeper insights into the nation’s cultural evolution. The adventure then progresses to Nyaruguru district, known for its spiritual heritage including the famous site of the Virgin Mary apparition and the towering statue of Jesus Christ in Nyarushishi.

As the air cools and the environment becomes lush, riders approach Nyamagabe, the natural gateway to Nyungwe National Park. This ancient rainforest marks the thrilling final highlight of the trail, welcoming adventurers into one of Africa’s most biodiverse ecosystems.

The South Heritage Corridor Trail is designed to maximize off-road pleasure and authenticity. Approximately 90 percent of the route consists of scenic dirt roads that weave through the bottoms and summits of Rwanda’s thousand hills, offering continuous adrenaline and stunning visual rewards. In Nyanza, riders enjoy a refreshing overnight stay before continuing day two along the scenic Gitwe off-road section into Nyungwe’s highland rainforests.

This trail is not just a road. It is a compact expedition through Rwanda’s soul, where riders experience lively rural communities, observe cultural heritage in its original setting, and navigate landscapes that shift from tranquil farmlands to dramatic mountain sides.

The South Heritage Corridor Trail provides an unmatched motorbike adventure. Riding Rwanda invites thrill-seekers, nature lovers, culture explorers, and all who value authentic experiences to embrace the freedom of the ride while connecting with the stories that define the Land of a Thousand Hills.
